Tokyo Metalcore band ASK I FALL is more than meets the eye. With a global influence and a band made up of different nationalities, this amalgamation of metalcore musicians brings a unique perspective to the Tokyo scene. Last month we caught up with Rid, the singer of ASK I FALL, and chatted about the band’s background and what they are bringing to the Tokyo metalcore scene (and beyond!).

Can you tell us the story of how ‘Ask I Fall’ came together?

Basically myself and Zach, who was the ex-bassist of the band, and is currently actually still our producer because he’s still in the family and helping us with production, we both were looking for a metalcore band. We just posted on Craigslist, we also have Craigslist in Japan, looking for our metalcore bands. We got connected there, and from there it was a singer and a producer/guitarist/bassist and we decided to make our own band. After that Nushiva, which is still the current guitarist, and another drummer at the time, we met separately on other platforms. Then the band formed. Basically, it all started with two foreigners here in Japan deciding to their own metalcore bands.

You guys call yourself a “global” metalcore band, can you explain what that means?

For global, it simply means that all the members come from different countries. Even when we started the band, we were actually deciding of one Japanese (member), one Russian, one Italian and one French. Now that two years have passed, the band is in the same situation, we are still all from different countries. We have me from Italy, we have Matthew from the US, we have on the drums Niko from Norway and Nushiva from Japan. That’s why we call ourselves a global band.

There have recently been some new additions to the ‘Ask I Fall’ line-up, what are you looking forward to most with these new inclusions?

We have new additions as you can see from our socials. We have Nikolai on the drums and Matthew joining us on the bass. Absolutely the thing we are looking most forward to, first they are opening us to diversifying even more our background in music. Nikolai is coming from a more rock/pop type of music which is a great addition to working more on our melodic parts. Matthew actually comes as well from rock/emo type of sound which, again helps us on the melodic parts since me and Nushiva are more on the metal, heavy guys. We give a good balance to the band and the perspective.

Second, we are definitely looking at more commitment and professionalism. In Japan, it is competitive to be a band, so you need to be professional and dedicated to it. It’s a lot of expenses and a lot of competition. We are definitely looking forward to seeing them bring in a lot more professionalism and diversification of sound into the band.

At the end of last year, you released two singles, ‘LINKS’ and ‘The One’, is there any new music on the horizon?

Yes, there is absolutely new music on the horizon. We actually have things that we have been producing before with the old line-up. Having now a new line-up it slowed us down a little bit because we just decided to review a couple of things, so we could make it more personal to the new style and the new influences that we have. So, we are just taking a little bit more than we thought to release new music but absolutely, please stay tuned. Also, you organise a festival called ‘Moshin’ Tokyo’, can you tell us about it? Will it return sometime soon?

Moshin’ Tokyo is an international metalcore festival that we started here a little less than two years ago and is now up to volume ten. We have been organising this in Tokyo and in other cities in mostly the Kanto area, which is the North part of Japan. We have done Kanagawa area, Chiba area and Nagano area. This is basically bringing together lots of the metalcore international and local scene together. What we’ve always wanted to do is make these metal events a little more international. We’ve been going to lots of metalcore live events, but we realised the scene was still mostly Japanese, pretty domestic here. I will definitely want it to start becoming a bridge to bring in foreigner metal fans and Japanese metal fans and bands at the same time.

That’s why we have been running Moshin’ Tokyo. So far, it’s going great. We always have DJ’s, and bands come in and from the next time we also are adding in new interesting things, I don’t want to spoil it but, we are working with some new artists including pole dancers and any kind of new, nice shows we can bring into the nights to make it more fun and more international.

We also have a new event coming soon, in July. (Since the interview, dates have been released, so if you are in Tokyo on the 1st of July, click here for tickets). Usually what we do is one every two-three months, so we definitely want to have a couple before the end of the year.

Lastly, do you have anything you want to promote or for fans to look out for coming soon?

Looking forward, we have three things. Firstly, you can look forward, as I mentioned before, to new music. We have a lot of tracks coming out and this is the work of the new line-up coming in. You will hear probably new influences, a new way of composing and potentially a new way of impacting the listeners, so please look forward to new music.

Second, you can look forward to and as you know, we like partying together. So, if you are in Tokyo, you can look forward to finding new parties and not just Moshin’ Tokyo, but on top of that, we have been thinking about new concepts or something a little more intimate. Doing like sessions more around acoustic, unplugged type of events. So not just a metalcore concert but more like unplugged type of events where we invite DJs, drinks and those kinds of things. Something we can do for a more limited number of people here in Tokyo.

Third, I don’t want to spoil it but yeah, we are starting our TikTok account. There again, there is a new concept on that, and we would like to show everyone another aspect of the bands that we haven’t shown so far. I cannot tell too much about that, but we’ve been working a lot on how to show ourselves on TikTok as well.Be ready to follow!

Like with many artists, streaming and purchasing their music helps them out and right now, as the scene is rebuilding in the wake of the pandemic, every little bit counts.
