Vietnamese/NZ metalcore band GAI 荄 have been making waves from the beginning. With their latest single ‘Viva La Deception‘, it seems there is more depth in this bands repertoire than we could even imagine.
Following up from their previous singles ‘Gutter Rat’ and ‘Same Old Story‘, it is clear to see that this young band is made up experienced musicians. Deriving its name from the Vietnamese word for ‘thorn’, the band takes inspiration from the paradoxical nature of life itself. Much like a thorn being on the side of a beautiful flower like a rose, GAI 荄 applies this concept to their music. Embracing the duality of existence – where fragility meets resilience.
This display of modern metalcore is so polished, but somehow does not lose the raw essence that embodies this form of expression. ‘Viva La Deception‘ is about no longer letting your abuse impact your life, moving on and exposing them for the pitiful person they are. It is a controlled release of chaos and rage, fusing nu-metal style guitar riffs with heavy hardcore, bordering on beatdown, riffs. Brutal, beautiful and satisfying, it’s surely one for the rage playlist.
