It feels like it has been a very special year for tours. Bands that were the soundtrack to our angsty teenage years and that we fought tooth and nail to defend against the “that’s not real metal” crowd have been hitting our shores with full force. Not in a way that screams nostalgia, but in a way that has said our music has staying power.

That was the mood once again last night in The Gov for Bury Tomorrow. While the opening acts were a beautiful blend of bands at different parts of their journey, the punters united to not just cheer for the act they were there for, but to also get onboard with some artists that they had not heard of till that day.

Sydney’s Heists were up first to set the tone. Every bit as melodic as they are furious, their driving riffs and harmonised vocals inspired the stragglers from out in the beer garden and into the room. Their set was not that of a typical opening act. Not that there was an ego, far from it, more a belief in their music and performance. Their first song got the venue warm and ‘Left To Loathe’ kicked it up higher. Only six songs, but it was a statement well made.

Following on was the band that seemed to really draw the younger crowd in, Headwreck. An act that has harnessed sonic chaos and turned it into an art form, their energy was undeniable. They had the room bouncing without much prompting. You just cannot help it. Wielding an subtle charisma, everything from their look to their sound screamed presence. Hands down one of the most interesting and eclectic bands in Australia’s scene right now and they are deserving every bit of the hype around them. Oh and shout outs to the WWE references, I very much enjoyed that.

A soundtrack of country music set the tone for our international support, Alabama’s finest Gideon. The metalcore cowboys have committed to showcasing the good ole South, and it has given us one of the most fun bands going around. They have this unrelenting heaviness that just hits you like a truck, or should I say a 4X4, but they somehow bring the party at the same time. Opening with ‘Wrong One’, those who had not yet experienced the sheer force of Gideon were quickly blown away. Their energy inspired stage divers and just carnage in the pit. A lot of people kind of get swept up in the power and the gimmick, but when you break it down, this band is musically so much more intricate. It’s not complicated but it’s smart and that is the beauty of the Alabama boys. Hopefully we get a headline tour from them soon.

The calibre of the opening bands were something to behold, because it did not feel like a chore waiting for the headliner. That being said, once Bury Tomorrow hit the stage, it is obvious they are still at the top of their game. Starting off with ‘Choke’ I realised very quickly just how much the Hampshire metalcore sensation have very much been the blue print for so many acts that came after them.

Dancing through their discography, it felt like they left no stone unturned. Tracks like ‘LIFE’, ‘Heretic’ and ‘Let Go’ all rang heartily off the walls and sheer joy radiated from the band. Their newest single ‘Sx’ went just has hard as their classics, with the band encouraging people to let loose and go crazy. Some cheeky banter happened from frontman Dan Winter-Bates with the Adelaide audience and it just added to the overall good vibes of the show.

Technically, Bury Tomorrow are one of the most impressive bands in metalcore and, honestly, incredibly underrated. That was very much evident throughout their set. Vocals were on point and, every note felt. That was not the biggest takeaway. The most notable thing about this show was that every single person in that room seemed so happy to be there, none more than the musicians onstage themselves.

Finishing off, giving a little joke about an encore, they left us with ‘Abandon Us’ and honestly, they easily could have played for another hour if they wanted.

Bury Tomorrow reminded me just how much I love metalcore.
