It’s mighty tempting to stick in your comfort zone and listen to the same few albums from the year you first discovered heavy music…

But then you miss out on some of the ripper new music coming out.

Here are five tracks from the last week of releases that got our attention.

TERESA- ‘Force Feed The Misery’

If you like your core music a little more melodeath, then this band from Thailand 100% needs to be on your radar. Snarling vocals, guitars that switch effortlessly from catchy riffs to straight-up chugs and a double-kick that sounds like a machine gun, ‘Force Feed The Misery’ has all the makings of premier deathcore track. It has an element of theatre and of course an absolutely nasty breakdown, what more do you actually need?

eighteen april- ‘Villian’

We last heard some new music from South Korea’s eighteen april back in…well, April, so getting another release a few months later feels like a treat. ‘Villian’ is a beautiful piece of melodic modern metalcore. The vocals are stunning, and the melancholic soundscape is atmospheric. It has a slow build that is cinematic, a real full body chills moment.

Vana- Bleeding Heart

Fresh off of winning hearts around Australia on tour with Ocean Sleeper, Aotearoa’s finest Vana has been very generous with her latest music offerings. ‘Bleeding Heart’, inspired by the bleeding heart flower, draws a parallel between the cycle of a flower in bloom and the fragile, finite nature of human emotion. This is reflected in both lyrically and sonically. Vana is continuously proving herself to be a rising force in the heavy music scene and we can’t wait to keep watching her blossom.

Windwaker- dna

There have been some new Aussie bangers in the past week, so picking one to add to the list was a little difficult. One band we always find it impossible to look past is Windwaker. Debuting their new single ‘dna’ last week on Triple J’s Like A Version, the genre-bending maestros show that they are always on the forefront of experimentation. The track is another preview of their upcoming album, smile, you’re on camera and it just ads another level to our excitement.

Prompts- ‘Drowning’

Okay, this is not exactly a new release, but the Tokyo-based metalcore breakouts have FINALLY dropped the music video for ‘Drowning’. One of the hidden gems off their latest EP, Parasite Dream, the single offers another layer to the band’s sound evolution. There is not much else to say then other this single should be one of the biggest songs in metalcore this year. Don’t sleep on it.
